Baptisms

baptism "For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ." - Galatians 3:27

The Sacrament of Baptism incorporates us into the Church, the Body of Christ, and is our introduction to the life of the Holy Trinity.  Learn more about the sacrament of baptism at goarch.org

Baptismal Seminar

Before someone is baptized at St. John the Baptist Church, a Baptismal Seminar is held to present and discuss elements of the Sacrament, involvement of the Godparent with his/her Godchild, early Christian upbringing and parish community support.  The participation of the parents and that of the Godparent(s) is vital for the completion of every child’s Baptism at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church.

Sacrament Guidelines

Baptisms may be performed all through the year except during Great Lent, on Great Feast Days of our Lord, and Christmas Day through the Feast of Theophany.  The name that is chosen for the child should be of Biblical or Christian origin. Only one name is canonically correct.

The Sponsor or Godparent must submit a Letter of Eligibility signed by his/her local parish Priest, verifying current stewardship and good standing in the Orthodox Faith.  Parents should carefully chose a sponsor who will be a good Christian example and will take seriously the awesome responsibilities a sponsor assumes.  The Godparent is the child’s intercessor and spiritual parent before God.  With the Godparent rests the responsibility of interceding to God for the child and upholding the Holy Baptism in every honorable way God intends throughout the child’s life.  Since the infant is unable to make the necessary confession of faith, the Godparent stands and vouches for the child. He should be ready to recite the Nicene Creed either in English or in Greek.  If married, the Godparent must be married in the Orthodox Church by an Orthodox Priest.  If he has married outside the Orthodox Church he may not become a Godparent.  A person who has been excommunicated or anathematized by the Orthodox Church may not become a Godparent.

The Godparent provides the following items on the day of the baptism:

  • A complete change of white clothes for the child. (White only please)
  • One white regular undershirt (‘Onesie’)
  • A gold Cross for the child
  • A bottle of olive oil
  • One bar of soap
  • Two white hand towels
  • One white bath towel
  • One white sheet
  • One candle per Godparent

To schedule a baptism or request a Letter of Eligibility to become a Godparent at another church, please call the Church Office at (847) 827-5519.
